Torquay sits on the south Devon coast in a stretch that markets itself, with more justification than most such names, as the English Riviera. The claim rests on a real quirk of geography: a sheltered south-facing bay and a mild microclimate that lets palm trees grow along the seafront, in England, year-round.
The town is built around a harbour, with the beaches and the promenade curving away on either side and Victorian terraces stepping up the hills behind. It is a holiday town and has been for two centuries, which shapes the rhythm of a term here — busy and international in summer, quiet and distinctly English from October onwards.
Devon is the reason to come rather than Torquay alone. The coast path runs in both directions along one of the most walked coastlines in Britain; Dartmoor, open moorland with wild ponies, is half an hour inland; and the fishing villages around the bay — Brixham, Paignton — are a short bus or ferry ride. For a student the practical version is that the free thing to do after class is a good one, in most weather.
Torquay is also Agatha Christie's town. She was born here and set much of her work along this coast, and the town has never stopped mentioning it — which for a language learner is a more useful hook than it sounds, because her English is exactly the register most course books are written in.
It is worth knowing how the year divides here, because it decides who is in your class. Summer in a resort town means younger students and larger groups; from autumn to spring the school is quieter and the classes are smaller and older. Neither is better, but they are different terms, and choosing your months is choosing which one you get.
Two things to weigh. This is a small town and the quietest place on this site; a student who wants a city will feel that quickly, and Exeter — a proper small city with a university — is the usual answer, about 45 minutes away. And it is seasonal in a way the bigger destinations are not: winter here is genuinely quiet. Some students choose exactly that, because a quiet town with one language school is a place where you cannot avoid speaking English.
