Find Out Which Schools Are For You And Start Your Journey

Edinburgh is a capital that looks like one. The Old Town runs along a ridge from the castle down the Royal Mile, and the Georgian New Town sits below it in straight lines; both are UNESCO listed and both are ordinary places where people live and work. The effect on arrival is unusual — the city does not need to be explained to you.

The scale suits a student. Edinburgh is compact and hilly, and almost everything a term here involves is within a walk. Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano with a view over the whole city, is inside the boundary and takes under an hour to climb. Calton Hill and the Water of Leith walkway are the same kind of thing: countryside-sized experiences reachable after class.

August is the argument and the caveat at once. The Edinburgh Festival and the Fringe — the largest arts festival in the world — take over the city for a month, and a student here in August gets thousands of shows, most of them small and many free. The same month roughly doubles the population and the accommodation prices. Studying here in August is a genuinely different experience from studying here in February, and both are defensible; the thing to avoid is arriving in August without having booked.

What is free is substantial. The National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery and the Portrait Gallery all cost nothing, and they are good enough to return to. The city is also the easiest base in Britain for getting to actual wilderness — the Highlands start a couple of hours north.

Beyond the centre, Leith is where the city does its everyday living: a former port, now the part of Edinburgh with the most restaurants per street and the least tourism. Students who want to hear ordinary Scottish English rather than the version spoken to visitors tend to end up there.

Weekends are unusually easy to fill. Glasgow is under an hour by train and is a completely different city — bigger, louder, better for music. Stirling and its castle are closer still, and the coastal villages of Fife are a short ride over the Forth bridges. Edinburgh Airport connects to most of Europe and to Türkiye and the Gulf with one change.

Two things to weigh. The weather is cool and windy rather than cold, and Scottish summers are short; a proper jacket is a year-round item. And Edinburgh is among the more expensive cities in the UK, with a smaller gap to London than most students expect.

Studying here. Topstudy works with two schools in Edinburgh. Kaplan Edinburgh and Oxford International Edinburgh each offer General English, Semi-Intensive English and Intensive English, so the full range of weekly loads is available and the two are directly comparable on timetable, class size and location.

Accommodation. Alongside host families, Kaplan Edinburgh places students in Anne Macleod, Arran House and Milton Road. These are purpose-built student residences with their own communities inside them; a host family remains the stronger option if your difficulty is finding enough English outside class. Book earlier than you would elsewhere if your dates touch August.

Who it suits. Students who want a city that is walkable and beautiful without being small; anyone who would use the Fringe rather than just witness it; and students who want the Highlands reachable on a weekend.
