Find Out Which Schools Are For You And Start Your Journey

Bristol sits in the south-west of England, built on hills above a harbour that made it one of the country's great trading ports. That history is visible everywhere — in the Georgian terraces of Clifton, in the floating harbour that now holds restaurants and museums instead of cargo, and in Brunel's suspension bridge across the Avon Gorge, which is the image most people carry of the city before they arrive.

What they do not expect is how young and how unconventional it feels. Bristol has two large universities and a long-standing independent streak, and the result is a city with a visible creative culture rather than a merely advertised one. Street art is the obvious example: the city is Banksy's home, murals are a normal feature of residential streets, and the annual Upfest festival repaints large parts of the Bedminster area. Music runs just as deep, with a club and live scene that produced trip-hop and drum and bass and has not stopped since.

For a language student the practical consequence of all this is the quality of everyday conversation available. A city with a large student population and an active independent scene is a city with a lot of cafés, small venues, markets and volunteer projects — which is to say a lot of low-pressure situations in which to actually use English with people who are not being paid to speak slowly to you.

Bristol is also unusually walkable and green for a British city of its size. Central areas connect on foot, the harbourside is a continuous walking route, and there are large open spaces at the Downs above Clifton. The city was the UK's first designated Cycling City and the network of routes reflects it; cycling is a normal way to commute rather than a sport.

Location works in the student's favour. Bath is close enough to be an afternoon rather than an excursion, Cardiff and Wales are just across the Severn, the Cotswolds are immediately north, and the Devon and Cornwall coasts are reachable for a weekend. London is a direct train. This is a city from which you can see a great deal of southern Britain without ever needing a long journey.

Costs sit below London, though Bristol is not a cheap British city — its popularity has pushed rents up over the last decade. It is best understood as mid-priced: noticeably more affordable than the capital, not as economical as the northern cities.

Studying here. Topstudy works with EC Bristol, offering General English and Intensive English. General English builds everyday fluency across the four skills at a standard weekly load. Intensive English increases the hours and suits students working to a deadline — an exam, an application, or a short stay to be made the most of.

Accommodation. Host families, residences and shared flats are all available. Bristol's hills are worth mentioning as a practical matter rather than a scenic one: the difference between a flat twenty-minute walk and a steep one is real, and worth asking about when accommodation is offered.

Weather. Mild by British standards — the south-west is warmer and less harsh than the north — but wet. Expect rain through much of the academic year and mild rather than hot summers.

Who it is for. Students who want a British city with genuine character rather than a generic one; anyone drawn to music, art and independent culture; and students who want a base for seeing the south-west and Wales as well as studying.
