Vancouver is the Canadian city where the mountains are visible from the street. That is not scenery for its own sake — it changes what a student does with the hours outside class. The North Shore mountains are across the water and reachable on public transport plus a short bus; Whistler is a couple of hours up the Sea-to-Sky Highway; the Pacific is at the bottom of most streets running west. A term here is one of the few where "I went hiking after class" is a normal sentence rather than a weekend expedition.
The city itself is compact for its reputation. Downtown sits on a peninsula with Stanley Park at the end of it — a thousand acres of forest with a seawall path around the outside that people walk, run and cycle year-round. Granville Island's market is on the south side of False Creek, reachable by a small ferry that costs less than you expect. Kitsilano across the water is the beach neighbourhood. The SkyTrain, an automated light rail, connects the suburbs and the airport to the centre without a driver in sight.
The language environment is worth thinking through before you book. Vancouver is very international, with large Mandarin-, Cantonese- and Punjabi-speaking communities, so how much English fills your day depends a good deal on the choices you make outside class. Students who want a gentle start find that reassuring; students who want full immersion usually get there by choosing a host family and joining something — a sports club, a volunteer group — beyond school. Either way it is a choice worth making on purpose.
Weather is mild and wet. Vancouver does not get Toronto's winter — snow downtown is an event, not a season — but it rains, persistently, from roughly November to March. Summers are dry, bright and among the best in Canada. A proper rain jacket matters more than a heavy coat.
Budget, as in most popular coastal cities, is worth planning early. Accommodation is the largest line and the market moves quickly, so a confirmed room booked ahead is usually the better call than a slightly cheaper one still being arranged.

St Giles Vancouver uses GEC King Edward, GEC Viva, GEC Pearson, GEC Marine Gateway, APT Living and the YWCA residence. The GEC buildings and APT Living are purpose-built student housing with their own communities inside them; a host family remains the stronger choice if your real problem is that you do not speak enough English outside class.
Who it suits. Students who want mountains and ocean inside a normal week rather than as a holiday; anyone choosing between a residence and a host family on language grounds, because Vancouver makes that choice matter more than most cities do; and students who want the widest set of schools to compare in one place.
