Find Out Which Schools Are For You And Start Your Journey

Brisbane is Australia's third-largest city, built along a wide river bend in the subtropical north-east of the country. It is the capital of Queensland, and it sits between Sydney's scale and the smaller coastal towns in a way that suits students well.

The climate is the first thing to say. Brisbane is subtropical: warm to hot for most of the year, humid in summer, and mild and dry in winter. There is no cold season in the northern European sense. Summer brings genuine heat and afternoon storms, which is worth knowing rather than discovering. For students coming from cold climates, the practical effect is that outdoor life runs year-round.

The city is organised around the river, and the river is genuinely used — ferries are part of public transport rather than a tourist novelty, and the CityCat services along the water are the pleasant way to move between districts. South Bank, on the opposite side from the centre, is the city's best public space: parkland, a man-made swimming lagoon, the state gallery and museum, and weekend markets, all free to use.

Brisbane is smaller and slower than Sydney or Melbourne, and that is its main argument. The centre is walkable, the cost of living is lower than the two larger cities, and the pace leaves more room to actually meet people rather than commute. For a language student the smaller scale is usually an advantage: you build a routine and a circle faster in a city where the same faces recur.

Its position is the other draw. The Gold Coast and its surf beaches are an hour or so south, the Sunshine Coast is north, and the hinterland ranges with their rainforest walks are inland from both. Further north lie the reef and the tropics. Brisbane is the practical base from which Queensland is reachable.

Work rights are a genuine consideration for students choosing Australia, and they change.

Studying here. Topstudy works with two schools in Brisbane. LSI Brisbane offers General English – Afternoon, Semi-Intensive English and Intensive English; English Path Brisbane offers General English and Semi-Intensive English. The afternoon option matters more in Australia than elsewhere, because many students here combine study with part-time work — a free morning is the difference between the two fitting together and not.

Accommodation. Host families, residences and shared apartments are available. Brisbane's suburbs are spread out but the river and the busway make commuting workable; ask which suburb and what the journey actually involves.

Who it is for. Students who want warm weather and outdoor life without Sydney's prices; anyone planning to combine study with work; and students who prefer a city where they will not feel anonymous.
