Toronto is Canada's largest city and the one where the phrase "everyone is from somewhere else" is a description rather than a slogan. More than half of its residents were born outside Canada, and the practical effect on a language student is specific: nobody will assume your English should already be perfect, and nobody will switch to your first language to be helpful. You are surrounded by people who learned English as adults and are using it all day, which is a very different environment from a city where you are the only one making mistakes.
The city is organised as a set of neighbourhoods rather than one centre, and the one you study in shapes the experience more than the city does. Downtown around Bloor and Yonge is dense, vertical and fast. Kensington Market and Chinatown to the west are low-rise, cheap to eat in and full of the kind of small transactions that force you to speak. Queen Street West is where the independent shops and music venues are. The Distillery District is Victorian brick and slower. They are all reachable on the same transit fare.
The TTC — subway, streetcars and buses on one system — is what makes that possible. Two subway lines cross downtown and the streetcars cover the older neighbourhoods the subway misses. A student pass is the normal way to use it.
Toronto sits on Lake Ontario, which is easy to forget from downtown and obvious the moment you reach the waterfront. The Toronto Islands are a short ferry ride and are the standard summer answer: beaches, bike rental, and a view of the skyline that explains the city's shape better than any map. Niagara Falls is a day trip. Montréal and Ottawa are reachable by train or bus for a long weekend.
The seasons here are distinct, and worth planning around. Winter runs from December to March, with snow and wind off the lake, and the city is built for it — the PATH network runs underground through much of downtown, so daily life carries on whatever the weather. Bring a proper coat and choose your start date deliberately. Summer is the opposite: warm, long and lived outdoors, with festivals most weekends.

A residence gives you your own room, a predictable monthly cost and other students in the building; a host family gives you more hours of English a day and a fixed routine. In Toronto the deciding factor is usually location — how far you want to be from class when it is minus fifteen outside.
Who it suits. Students who want a large city without needing to be fluent to survive it; anyone who wants a timetable heavy enough to move fast, which the intensive courses provide; and students who would rather be one of many people learning English than the only one.
